Mouthpop

The sounds have great similarities with handpops, but it enables the performer to shift between pitches rapidly. This is one of the innovations of the Wikiphonium project, especially the way it is systematised and used in compositions. The technique is performed by blowing air through the instrument and then stopping it with the tongue, which results in shortest tones possible on the instrument. There are only 12 possible tones that can be produced by this technique, and I have chosen to notate them from sub-contra B to contra Bb. It is chosen a notation with an arrow to the note-head, pointing to the left (se examples).

Even if these pops can be played relatively fast, the need to fill air into the mouth cavity, and this makes it possible to play approximately three notes per second.
